Surfacing II

From my collection of yardsale paintings.

The first sign of autumn is sound. Leaves no longer sigh and whisper with the wind. They clatter and complain above the gutteral of seed pods and the rasp of dry grass below.

Here, the trees are about a third turned, but already some leaves are falling. They scatter and scurry along the sidewalks and streets in the wake of passing cars like demented brown mice.

Sometimes, Fall is described as a resignation, a gentle melancholy of fading embers, a quiet, golden passage into the stark of winter.

Here, in the North Country, the forest flares and flames in unreconciled bonfire fury. Equinoctial storms are full of rage and resentment at the dying of the light.

Scorched earth.

Have you noticed that versatile word up has acquired additional usage?

The cliche about "stepping up to the plate/challenge" is reborn by "ramp up" and "man up," and even "hug up."

Why do doctors call what they do...practice?

Why is the man who invests your money called a broker?

And why is an airport called a terminal?

So glad to see you posting again Bernita. I hope you're in better health; I've been wondering how you were.

My Mum always liked autumn but I don't. I see the days drawing in and think of the cold and dark ahead - and yet I'm sure I'd do better to enjoy the mild weather now and the beautiful autumn colours. I love your descriptions.

I've got my skiis sharpened and waxed... Let's get this leaf falling thing over with and bring on the snow!

This is my first autumn in Arizona. I miss the Fall smell and the turning leaves and the crisp air. October is my favorite month! Here, it doesn't feel like October. :-(

I hope you're doing well, Bernita!

*hugs and love*

Great to see you're still around. [wave/hug]

It's cooling off and getting rainy here. The weeds in my tiny backyard have mostly gone to seed. Not sure about the trees in the neighborhood; I haven't been outside in about a month. Yeah, for me that's normal. :)

All good questions! :) Your thoughts of Fall's arrival were a soothing herald of times ahead.

Your description is on the mark, Bernita. Currently beautiful here, but the thought of what's to come is depressing. :-/
Good to see you here.

Autumn is my favorite time of year. The glorious colors, the crispness, the clean air after a good frost, life is good and grand.

Natasha, I spent three years in Houston, where fall is accomplished by the dropping of one single oak leaf in November - you're right, it just isn't the same.

Nice to see you up and about, Bernita; you have been missed.

I know a lot of people hate winter, and it's justified. I myself would probably like it better if I had a fireplace by which to sit and read.

By the way, I hope you're feeling better!

Funny, but I never thought of fall colors as "raging". I've always thought of them more like partying. Having one last big, colorful bash before winter shushes them with her big white blanket.

Fabulous imagery.

I worry about you,Bernita. I know what bad health is like. Nasty.

I hunt for nice art at yard sales too - and at thrift stores. I have some really gorgeous things, some signed by the artists. I'm running out of wall space though. ... So sad.

I like the fall. We have a mixture of deciduous trees and conifers. So some of them turn grogeous colours and then skeletal, awating spring-resurrection. Other trees bear the snow on green branches.

Male menopause ... often hidden under the phrase "cranky old men."

Come visit me on my blog and add to the "The Pixie Sneezed" write it for fun thingie.

Glad you felt up to posting again, Bernita! I've missed chatting, and I'll give you a jingle soonish, too.

I love the image of leaves scurrying like little brown mice. Usually the only mice I see are the dead ones Molly the killer Maine Coon Cat leaves for us at the foot of the basement stairs.

We are having lovely Fall weather, crisp, hovering around freezing at night, but sunny and 50s in the day. I miss the sun when it banks itself like embers you want to save for the morning, but it's part of the seasons and thus a good thing!

Madre turned 70 this month.

Whirlochre comes from a flurry of autumn leaves I saw in 1990/91 — a whipped-up cyclone of dusky oranges and yellows that has stayed with me.

Where I am right now, we're just at the start of the best of it all, so I'm having fun.

Glad you've surfaced. I picture you as a sequinned water boatman, gliding between fallen leaves afloat.

It's just nice here now. Wish it would stay this way.

To add to your footnotes;

Is a fly without wings called a "walk?"

If a parsley farmer is sued, do they garnish his wages?

What if there were no rhetorical questions?

So wonderful to see you again. What a terrible time you've been going through if you couldn't even sit at the pc for half an hour, even drugged up.

I do so hope you're finally on the mend.
