Obligatory "Owed"

Security Blanket,
from the Dream Collection by Martin Eichinger,
bronze in granite base.

The dust in the blogsphere has been slaked with tears - Miss Snark has retired her blog.

But even before the courtesy of her heads-up e-mail, one could see it coming.

Though she does not represent my genre and I have never queried her (yes, I have a good idea who she is) she once told me I was "a good writer."

You have no idea how those few words have sustained me - during those dark days when all one does is tote up one's disadvantages and despair at one's ignorance.

And it is entirely thanks to Miss Snark that I have had requests for partials and fulls.

In equal parts with her honesty, wit and acerbic analysis, I will miss her splendid persona: her smelling salts, her reticule, Grandmother Snark and Killer Yapp.

She delighted my days.

I will miss you, Dear Heart, but I understand.

The best advice one can give any beginner is to read her Archives - carefully, and completely.

Hours and days spent honing the query letter to perfection - sent off to Miss Snark - who responds with not one, but two, WTF?

What is incredibly clear and concise to you - obviously isn't to everyone.

Focus - rethink - rewrite for clarity - don't be a nitwit.

I'm going to miss her, too.

Blogland just became a lot less exciting place, Ric.
She enlarged my vocabulary too.

I guess her commitment to fellow bloggers became overwhelming.

And moderating comments - because of assholes and spam - and floods of e-mails took up as much or more time than blog posts too, Steve.

Wait a minute...you mean everyone got the heads-up email?

*sniff* I thought I was special...

Bernita said...

"everyone got the heads-up email?"
Must have, December, since I got one...
Typical of her consistent courtesy to her Snarklings.

You definitely are a good writer. Coming from her, though, that's like saying you're a fantastic, amazing, incredible writer. :-)

I'm bummed, darnit.

Bernita said...

I owe her a lot in practical terms, Natasha, and that encouragement is not the least of it.

Loved her blog - will miss her!

Her blog is certainly a treasure, especially for dedicated newcomers who accept there's no shortcuts in this game.

Her identity was outed on the AW boards some time ago but we (the moderators) deleted the pertinent bits within minutes.

I heartily endorse the advice you give at the end of your post. She'll be missed. (But something tells me this might be more of a hiatus than a blog-tirement.)

Oh, I figured, Bernita. :-)

But yes, typical indeed. I'm still too sad to bog about it. If not for her, I wouldn't know any of you.

Sphinx Ink will be distraught. She was a big fan of the Snarky One. I found some fun stuff there. That's too bad with all the hassle she had to endure.

I got the email too December!

Now I'm relegated to popping in over there to see how many more comments have registered! *sigh*

Not a Snarkling, but an occasional visitor...

I prefer to believe she's run off with Mr. Clooney and is living happily every after.

Bernita said...

For me, Sam, her blog had just about everything.

Frank, I do hope you are right.

I found you and Ric and Carla and many here, there, December.

Her blog was sheer joy at times, Charles, and always valuable.

Always my first stop in the morning, Bonnie, to get the gears in motion.

Raine, the only thing I didn't admire was her predeliction for gin.
Now if it had been rum as a tipple...

Kate Thornton said...

Bernita, I came back from vacation and was stunned.

I will miss my daily dose of gin, clues, poodles and acerbic wit.

Bernita said...

I suppose, Kate, that other blogging agents/editors will benefit from our cravings for an information fix.

I have learned so much from Miss Snark's blog.

I dearly hope this is just a hiatus and not a tearful fare-thee-well.

Scott from Oregon said...

I feel so out of the loop...

Bernita said...

People are pleading for a once-a-week return, Lady B.

Only if you intend to seek publication, Scott, otherwise, no.
She probably would have liked your "voice" though.

I'm overcome! I finally posted my salute to Miss Snark on my blog.
I'm so glad the blog is still up for reference.

I'm so glad the blog is still up for reference.
Indeed, Cynthia. As one progresses and acquires context, some items make sense that didn't before.

Aaarrggh - I'm playing catch-up, and just found out there's no more Miss Snark!

Among other things it's thanks to her that I found this little corner of cyberspace - specifically, because one of my few disagreements was a comment she made on Carla's ms.

Scott from Oregon said...

Where might one go, bernita, if one was seeking quality feedback-exchanges regardless of seeking publication?

My little corner of the cyber world seems devoid of those willing to read and discuss WIPs and if I don't finish last year's story I'll never move on to this years...

I was Miss Snark's very first reader, and commenter, too; she graced me with enough encouraging attention - just a couple of sentences - to keep me at it. Thanks to her, I better understand the rigour of this writerly business, at least.
I know enough now, not to approach until my work is ready...

Those were exciting, newbie times, Rick - the first Crapometer.

Scott, that question gets asked a lot. There are critique circles - you give, you get - the Crapometer site ( a spin-off from Miss Snark, intelligent and careful commentary) and there's Evil Editor - regular, outrageously funny, with solid advice/opinion from both EE and his Evil Minions.

As Frank said, Scary, she is a treasure.

I didn't get a letter. :(

Probably in your spam blocker, Desperate.
