Remembrance Day

Nothing moves me more than Remembrance Day.
The bugle, the salute, the silence.
The Stone of sacrifice, of memory, the slow cadence of names, the song.
Sorrow lifting like lark's wings above the assembled people.

Past and future meet at the Monument this day.
Time stops and links between the company of veterans and their seried ranks of ghostly warriors and the honour guard of soldiers and cadets who stand four-cornered with their weapons. Reaching back, stretching forward.

There are those in our societies who deny the past and decry the future, who dismiss our soldiers as psychopathic war-mongering killers, who prate a false peace but have never paid the cost, who will never understand that "there is no justice until the sword creates it, establishes it, guarantees it, gives it substance and significance. First the sword - then government - then law - then justice."

We have peace and justice today because of our veterans; we will have peace and justice tomorrow because of our soldiers. They have the keeping of it.
Because they believe.
In the still, secret citadel of their souls they believe in "pro patria." They believe in "truth, duty, valour."
They believe in peace and justice and preserve it with their heart's blood.

Two of mine are soldiers in the service of our country and our people.
They are there this day. They will be there every day.
Be just to them.

And I, a soldier in uniform in a public place has to fight hard to hold back the tears.
We honour your trust and we wield so delicately the lethal power you have given us. And we honour those who have gone before and taught us "to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."
