Cherished Role

Like a True Confessions omnibus
Her life a crisis catalogue,
Desertion, drink, divorce,
Gambling and abuse.

They had taken her kids, she said.
She found one in the morgue,
And two in jail - one for murder, one for dope,
The other one just took her wages.

Evicted by her landlord,
Cheated by her boss,
Beaten by her lover,
She moved from town to town,
From loss to loss.

Given haven, a different pattern,
She found it unexciting and too safe.
Her troubles had become, or always were,
Her raison d'etre, her dictum,
I am important, useful, she said,
So many times I've been a victim.
